Functions Of Proteins

Proteins have many functions in our bodies. There are thousands of proteins present in the human body perform functions too numerous. This functions diverse from protein to other ( every protein have specific function) some proteins act as carriers of vitamins, oxygen, and carbon dioxide while others work as structural , kinetic, catalytic, protective and signaling roles.

What Is The Functions Of Proteins:

1-Catalytic

All enzymes are complex protein in their structures . Most of biochemical reaction occur in the human body happen under the effect of catalytic enzymes which increase the rate of the reactions by increasing the frequency of collisions between reactants.
Eg: Catalase, Pepsin and Lipase.

2-Motile ( mechanical )

Some proteins named contractile proteins ( proteins responsible for movement ) , this proteins are the major component of muscles.
Eg: Actin and myosin

3-Structural

Some fibrous proteins provide the structure of connective tissues and bones . Eg: Collagen.
And others provide structure of hair and skin. Eg: Elastin and keratin.

4-Storage

Storage is one of the most proteins functions the body needed . Some proteins have the ability to store some vital nutrients.
Eg: Casien in milk , Ovalbumin in egg and Ferritin ( iron storage)

5-Transport

One function of proteins functions is transport , some proteins work as carrier of nutrients ( move specific molecule from one place to other place).
Eg: Serum albumin act as carrier of fatty acids and Hemoglobin act as oxygen carrier

6-Toxic response

Some proteins protect the body from toxins and its named protein toxins.
Eg: Snake venom toxins and Bacterial toxins.

7-Protection

Through 2 ways:

a- Immunity
Antibodies which are structurally proteins and its have big role in protecting the body from external infection like virus, bacteria and fungi.
Eg: Immuno-globulins

b-Blood
Some proteins act as clot-forming proteins which make blood clot when bleeding or injury.
Eg: Thrombin and Fibrinogen.

8-Regulation of cell metabolism

a-Hormones :

Are messenger proteins , have role in regulate some process and reaction happen in the human body. Eg: Insulin regulate blood glucose

b-Regulatory enzymes Eg: Phosphofructokinase.

super interesting. I'm always trying to learn more about the bodies chemistry. My science comprehension is a little on the low side but I try anyways.

I have a granddaughter with a genetic condition and I am really trying to comprehend how all this stuff work along with how, what, and why things go wrong.

I did not realize that proteins had so many functions.

The video was helpful.

That would be great all I know is it is an autusomal recessive genetic problem

This disease result from the absence of the area in the brain responsible for the balance and may cause problems in breathing in some cases and its common in in infants and children more than adults , and its result from some mutation in genes and DNA . i hope this information help.

Is it true ImChemist that the froth in a cuppacino is the protein in the milk? Thanks for this info.

ImChemist profile image

ImChemist Hub Author 15 months ago

Yes but its not the only source of protein in the cappuccino.
